Your Strong Willed Child

#topictalk: Do you have a strong-willed toddler or kid? This one’s for you!

Do you hear NO a lot? Does your child push back quite often? Know that your strong-willed child is not being defiant, or mean, or even manipulative. Your strong -willed child is a deeply sensitive child, who can be easily overstimulated and seeks a connection with you. So to help your child transition through the day, you must work WITH their will. This looks like engaging them in defining the routine, giving them a choice, and telling them the plan in advance.

For example, you could say “after we get dressed and put our jackets on, what comes next’? Or, tonight, would you like to eat off the blue plate or red plate? And, when we arrive at grandma’s we will first have dinner together, then we get to have playtime.”
This way, your child is involved in the plans, and feels like their will is taken in account. Do you have any other tips to share?
