Physical Fitness & Fun!

We all know how hard it is to get out of our own way and get some activity and exercise. It's not any different for our kids. They have been living in the same locked-down, do-nothing, boring world as the rest of us adults - forced to isolate from family and friends, forced to sit in front of a computer screen for far too long, forced to get comfortable being way too comfortable. We get it. We are living it too and, with the help of the warmer weather, we are here to say, LET'S GET ACTIVE! Studies have shown that even an hour of activity a day can contribute to better heart health, stress reduction, elevated and more even moods, increased energy, improved memory/productivity/creativity, and a boost in self-confidence. Child or adult - we all could use some of that. Physical fitness and exercise, for even the most reluctant of children, doesn't have to be a chore. Here are a few ways to help make getting the kids to do an hour of activity a day as easy as letting them watch Youtube:

1. Sidewalk Chalk Driveway Obstacle Course

2. Adventure Trail Walks / Hikes

3. Races (throw in bean bags, potato sacs, a spoon and egg, and three legged races to mix it up)

4. Family Bike Rides

5. Exercise Jar (different exercises written on pieces of paper in a jar - take turns drawing)

6. Add a "Movement Break" throughout the work/school day

7. Youtube exercise and yoga videos (take turns picking a new and interesting exercise video each day)

8. Dance Party!

9. Exercise Board Games (use your favourite board game and designate spots as certain exercises - i.e. land on this spot and do 30 jumping jacks)

And how can we forget...

10. THE FLOOR IS LAVA!

Once activity is part of a routine, it will be so much easier to get the kids up and moving. And don't forget, you may be working from home, but Parents need exercises too. Join in - it will provide a fun bonding experience and a much needed break from the monotony of everyday pandemic life. Have fun and get active!
